Almost 500 years after its founding, Havana will officially receive on June 7 its status as one of the seven wonder cities of modern world, distinguished mainly by its mythical charm, its warm and friendly environment, and the charisma and joviality of its inhabitants.
On the esplanade of the San Salvador de la Punta Castle, at the entrance of the bay, the monument and the commemorative plaque endorsing the recognition granted by the vote of hundreds of millions of people around the world during the third contest organized by the Swiss foundation New7Wonders will be unveiled, ACN reported on June 6.
According to that organization, its president, Bernard Weber, will attend the celebration on Tuesday. The election was a democratic exercise, which also included La Paz (Bolivia), Doha (Qatar), Durban (South Africa) Beirut (Lebanon), Vigan (Philippines) and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) on the list of the most amazing cities.
In order to celebrate the official reception of such an award, the squares, parks and streets of Havana, already among the most popular Caribbean destinations, will host until June 11 various events, which all residents and visitors to this city will be able to access free of charge.
According to the program, a cultural gala with performances by the Concert Band, the National Lyric Theater, the “Litz Alfonso” Ballet, the Entrevoces Choir and the group Buena Vista Social Club, among other artists, will take place on the night of June 7 at the Old Square of Old Havana’s historic area.
Also standing out among activities are two lectures by Bernard Weber and Félix Alonso, vice dean of the San Gerónimo de La Habana College, performances by street dance groups at Prado Promenade, a pictorial exhibition by students from the San Alejandro Academy and the Habana Maravilla sports festival.
