Among the most important results of Cuban medicine evaluated this year, it is highlighted that our country is one with the higher application and development of regenerative medicine, whose aim is to substitute or regenerate cells, tissues or organs in order to encourage the reestablishment of lost functions, and one of its supports is just the cell therapy.

The procedure is already applied in the fifteen provinces and in the special municipality of the Isle of Youth. Since 2004, when the application of Regenerative Medicine in Cuba was started, up to the month of October, 2016, the amount of people treated with mother cells was already up to some ten thousand cases; mainly in the specialties of Angiology, Orthopedics and Traumatology.

Some of the ailments in the specialty of Angiology are obliterans arteriosclerosis, critical ischaemia, and diabetic patients with ischaemia of lower limbs and lymphedema. In the case of orthopedics, regenerative medicine.is applied with good results in bone cysts, knee arthrosis, pseudoartrosis, and aseptic necrosis of the hip, and rachimedular traumatisms.

During the First Inter-American Interchange of Mother Cells, and the Fourth International Symposium of Regenerative Medicine, one of the most important events developed recently on this item, DSc Porfirio Hernández Ramírez assured that here also grows perceptibly the therapeutic use of platelet with regenerative aims.

A sample of the satisfactory results of this last application, as it came to light in the above-mentioned  last October scientific meeting, was that – by that time – added up already 8,568 sick people tried in the specialties of orthopedics, stomatology and maxillofacial surgery, angiology, sports medicine, ophthalmology, and general surgery.

Obliterans arteriosclerosis: The term arteriosclerosis suggests the enlargement and hardening of the arterial wall. It affects big arteries and of medium caliber, preferably on the small ones.
Lymphedema: The lymphedema refers to the type of edema produced by an obstruction in the lymphatic canals of the body.

Rachidial-medular traumatism: it is an injury caused to the spinal cord through the spinal column, where the cervical vertebrae have a higher risk probability of injury.
