Cuban athletics has several options for medals at the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, which were inaugurated on Wednesday in the Brazilian city and will run until February 18.
In that sport discipline, Cuba will have the leadership of sprinters Omara Durand and Yunidis Castillo, the latter the winner of five gold medals in scenarios of that level, ACN reported on September 7.
In the London 2012 Games, Castillo won the title in the 100m, 200m and 400m T46, so she will try to equal that performance, a possible goal for an athlete who on more than one occasion has proved to be very competitive.
The representative of the Caribbean island will also participate in the F47 long jump event, in which she won the silver medal at the World Championship hosted by Doha, Qatar, last October.
In the case of Durand, the owner of three titles (100, 200 and 400 m T12) in the universal event last year will also will be on track with serious aspirations to dominate these three specialties, this time in Rio de Janeiro city.
Also competing for Cuba in that discipline will be Leinier Savón, world champion in the 100m and 200m T12, and Leonardo DÃaz, triple monarch of the world in discus throwing, F56 category.
Four years ago, Cuba finished in 15th in the Paralympic Games with nine gold medals, five silver and three bronze, which is its best historic performance so far is such competitions.
Athletics exponents were precisely the ones who contributed most to that crop, with seven titles and four silver medals, followed by judokas (2-0-2) and swimmers (0-1-1).
