Cubans appear Among Favorites in Salvadoran Chess Tournament

Cuban GMs Lazaro Bruzon and Yuri Gonzalez are among the favorites to win the Zonal 2.3 Chess Tournament which starts today in the city of San Salvador.

The regional event grants two tickets for the coming World Cup and will be attended by 63 players led by Venezuelan Eduardo Iturrizaga, who with 2 663 ELO points is the first seed of the event, escorted by Bruzon (2 652).

Gonzalez (2 534) ranks third in that list, while the also Cuban Roberto Carlos Sanchez appears eighth with 2 404 units.

Other well-known players announced by the organizers are Colombian Camilo Ríos (2 501) and Costa Rican Bernal Gonzalez (2 494), who are also tough rivals in the fight for the WC tickets.
